Championing Children – set of leadership behaviours (document)
Championing Children is a framework, which has been developed to establish a common understanding about the particular abilities required to lead and manage multi-agency teams in children's services. In these services, professionals from different sectors come together to work around the needs of children.
The purpose of the framework is: to establish a common understanding of the distinctive anddifferent abilities required by managers of childrenís services who areresponsible for teams that include professionals from different sectors and backgrounds; and for services that break the mould.
The framework highlights seven aspects of leadership and management:
- Achieving outcomes
- Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child
- Providing direction
- Leading and managing change
- Working with people
- Managing information
- Communicating and engaging effectively with children, young people and families.
Most of these map directly onto the leadership and management standards or the common core for the front line children's workforce.
This shared set of skills, knowledge and behaviours for leaders concentrates mainly on the skills and behaviours associated with leading change, establishing relationships, developing teams, and acquiring knowledge.
These leadership skills are not exclusive to managers, and in an ideal service everyone should be exhibiting many of these behaviours, and developing the knowledge and skills.
